About the Album
This project was born out of a desire to capture songs I’ve written and didn’t want to forget: a sort of audio library I intended to revisit and record ‘for real’ later. Armed with my trusty $250 Tascam DP-03SD 8 track, I recorded these rough ‘sketches’ and, to my surprise, the results were like children: roughedged and imperfect, but unexpectedly charming and impossible to toss out.
Thus, the project began and soon acquired a colorful and talented supporting cast. My friend and raconteur Jay Graf lent his considerable talents as a first call musician to play lap steel on a few of the songs (all while offering beguiling tales and insights on topics far beyond the world of music). Those afternoons and evenings with Jay are priceless to me. Jay also shared some of our efforts with Percussive Batterié extraordinaire Robb White, a friend and fellow musician, and Robb soon risked his good reputation to lay down drums, and other things he slaps, on the tracks. His skill has made me believe in a musical god, a god that thinks I’ve behaved well enough to deserve a dose of Robb’s talent (or maybe I’ve just flown low enough under the radar).
Robb and I have forged a musical partnership and friendship the way it’s done these days—through texting. We developed a unique way of collaborating: with a song playing in the background, I used my iPhone to record myself ’mouth drumming’ percussion ideas then texted the recordings to Robb (hard to believe this approach hasn’t caught on!). During one such mouth drumming session my son Rene walked by and asked what on earth (or more likely wtf) I was doing. I replied, 'I’m beat boxing to Robb’ to which he quickly responded, ‘No, no you’re not’. Somehow Robb mystically translated these idiosyncratic utterances into the brilliant percussion you hear on Frame X Frame.
The third Musketeer to join this tight, loosely knit group was Dugan McNeill. A musical outlaw and friend to both Jay and Robb, Dugan is an extraordinary producer, instructor and bass player. He formed the venerable band Chameleon that experienced huge success in the 1970s and 80s. (And, man, Dugan’s got some Yanni stories…) Using the knowledge and experience he’s gained producing and playing on thousands of songs, Dugan polished this project the best anyone could expect. (And, man, those Yanni stories…)
This consortium of questionable, talented characters who have all become friends, are largely responsible for turning what started as a collection of rough song sketches into Frame X Frame, an album which I am extremely proud of.

Pulling away, on a westbound train
World goin’ by, like a hurricane
Slippin’ away, frame by frame
They met by chance, in a small cafe
Happenstance, well it happened that day
He caught her eye, she looked away
The day by day, frame by frame
It’s an age-old story, written over and over again
Lovers bound for glory
Just like holding sand, love slips right through your hands
They talked of life, and all that it brings
Smiled just right, they said all the right things
Six days in Rome, it was put to the test
This was going to be different than all the rest
Under moonlit nights in that quaint hotel
Bathed in the light things were going so well
But then, he took her hand, she looked away
The day by day, frame by frame
It’s the same old story, written over and over again
Down in flames of glory
Just like holding sand, love slips right through your hands
The day by day, frame by frame, slippin’ away
Pullin’ away on a westbound train
World goin’ by like a hurricane
Under moonlit nights in that quaint hotel
Bathed in the light things were going so right, going so well
The day by day, frame by fame, slippin ’away

We stood up, we fell down
Lost our way, our ship aground
I know that water will rise some day
Lift our sorrow and drift away
You to the east, me to the west
Into the great sunset
We lived with hope, we lived in fear
Tried to coax, one more year
But like these waves rolling out to sea
The tide has drawn on you and me
Into the mist, into thin air
To anywhere but here
Just looking for something to believe in
One heavenly day, one heavenly day
Just looking for one good reason
To believe that love will come to stay
One heavenly day, one heavenly day
Time gets lost, I find on you
In rescued moments, I hang onto
You’re sweet kiss and your caress
The way you looked in and out of that dress
The way your hair fell across your breasts
Mmmm, my heart stood still
But a child with a wall up, no good love could tear down
Other side salvation cried but the boy couldn’t hear a sound
With an eye to the sky, and an ear to the ground
Running wild heartbroken child
Missing you so hard, kissing you so hard
Everything comes, and everything leaves
Tall trees grow, and go to seed
That gypsy woman said she knew
That I’d spend my life with you
One less love-line in my hand
One more change in plans

Holes in his soles, his clothing is worn
Hasn’t felt this alone since the day he was born
Like a hole in the road people walk around and by
Most look away when they look when they look in his eyes
He was living the dream with a wife he adored
He had no idea she was looking for more
Never saw it coming when she set out on her own
Never was the same, nothing ever felt like home
Every day, the difference becomes clearer
This could be me this could be you
It’s getting harder to look in the mirror
Our own window we’re looking through
Where’s the love they say keeps this world turning
So many speak of?
Where’s the love from the Sunday sermon
Gonna rain down from above-where is this love?
Shakes off the cold, an old blanket for warmth
Feels the eyes settle over his form
Holds to a photo, his wife by the sea
Closes his eyes and he dreams
Sky so blue, water so clear
Pictures are painted, and then they all disappear how do I find myself here
Where’s the love they say keeps this world turning,
So many speak of?
Where’s the love from the Sunday sermon,
Gonna rain down from above

Driving home on a warm summer night
Life so sweet, your girls by your side
Every black man knows it can turn on a dime
Mind your own business, is some kind of crime
Along come a cowboy in a badge and a vest
Thinks he’s living in the wild wild west
Got an outlaw loose, ain’t no, taillight in back
Run you in for driving while black
We’ve all heard the echoes that some kind of change is near
The king had a dream but it didn’t find us here
Philando, they took your life
Caught on the wrong side the thin blue line
They’d drawn on you like you’re just another
Kicked to the curb like all the others
We knew the end when the story began
A story sold only lawyers can
Another killer set free, same old lies being told
Justice for sale another soul is sold
Lines are drawn, lines in the sand
They don’t mean nothing, when you just cross them again
This is our child, this is our truth
This far as we’ve come, this the best we can do?
The sun is setting, getting low in the sky
This land is weary, another good man has died
Dust rising up from the trail, it’s justice leavin’ town
From selma on up that’s how it’s always gone down
We’ve all heard the echoes that some kind of change is near
The king had a dream but it didn’t find us here
How can we believe, there’s some kind of change
How can we believe, when things stay the same
How can we believe, the king had a dream
How can we believe, when things never change
How can we believe, when things stay the same
The king had a dream, not a damn thing has changed

Religion on the television, it’s three a.m.
Got a man down on his knees
Making love to the TV lens
Like girls gone wild, and girls just gone bad
Says he’s got just what I need, gotta get me some of that
This is the window to your soul
Everything in this blue light is all you need to know
Praise be to everyone in TV land
I hold salvation right here, can’t you feel the man?
Lift your hands up to the screen, if you need the cure
Send your money now, yeah, and let’s be sure
I stand before you, with sorrow in my heart
And shame for what I’ve done, temptation got the better part
And as these tears, roll from my eyes
I beg forgiveness, in every tear I cry
And god is watching, watching over you
Just send in what you’ve got, you can be forgiven too
Praise be to everyone in TV land
I hold salvation right here, can’t you feel the man?
Lift your hands up to the screen, if you need the cure
Send your money now… 800-the-lord
Yeah, and let’s be sure
Ahhhhhh ahhhhhhmen
Ahhhhhh ahhhhhhmen

I’ve been gone going on, long about several years
Been on a slow, slow ride
I’ve been too afraid, too afraid to face my fears
Been on a slow, slow ride, away from here
Here comes your ghost again, it always reappears I been
Sweeping your footprints out but they,
They’re still walkin’ round here
Everything has long been broken
All the pictures long been burned but the
Back door still blows open, and your footprints still return
I’ve been on a slow ride, driving places I just can’t find
I’ve been too, too long gone
I just want to turn it around, can’t keep driving this road I’m
On I’ve been, I’ve been too, too long gone, I need to get back home
Here comes that feeling again, I need to get somewhere
Another drink, another pill, another friend, and one less care
Been trying so hard to remember
All the things I should forget but I just
Keep driving forever, but i never quite there get
I’ve been on a slow ride, driving back roads anesthetized I been,
I been too, too long gone
I just want to turn it around, got to beat those demons down
I been, I been too, too long gone, I need to get back home
Here comes your ghost again it always, reappears I been
Sweeping your footprints out but they
They’re still walking round’ here

Thinking ‘bout the day, the kids’ grandpa died
The only way he’d leave this farm, he always said
And looking up, he had a twinkle in his eye
On his last day, up in Jonny’s bed
There were good years and bad, we had a few
Good or bad years with him, you never knew
He always worked, with a twinkle in his eye
Like the one I saw, the day he died
Well, the skies hadn’t opened up in nearly two years
The dust it blew, just like snow
Tried to keep the tables full, and dried a few tears
Life out here, you just never know
Paid a visit from the man, at the F&M
Shook my hand and pointed out, the trouble we’re in
He had to wonder though why I was smiling
It was all I could do…
As he climbed into that shiny car, with shit on his boots
I recall those years, so many boys went off to war
Some were never quite the same again
We hired Lucas to help us out, with all the chores
I’ll never forget Luke, like his country did
He pulled our Maggie from the lake, the day she slipped in
Never thought twice about the fact, he couldn’t swim,
How can one man be, so damn brave
How can one man give, all he gave
Well, the kids have grown now they got, kids of their own
Yeah when they when they come around, we’re quite a few
I mix up all their names, hell that’s what old guys do
Yesterday, I called Jonny, sue
All the memories, we’ve raised up on this old farm
They lift me up and wash me clean, like a summer storm
Sittin’ on this porch darling, it’s quite a view
But nothing’s quite as beautiful, as looking at you
Lookin’ at you darling, looking at you
-
Wake up, it’s summertime, summer light is in our eyes
Let’s you and I take a walk
I’ve been standing at this door, like I wonder what they’re for
Sometimes I wish that you could talk
Awww, what are we waitin’ for
I think I hear some kids, there must be five or six
They can’t wait for me much longer
Well I hate to ask again but, patience is wearing thin
Their need for me couldn’t be stronger
Right now I’ve got my, head out the window
Rolling through the countryside, so many tales in the wind
Spending my days chasing after butterflies
I wake up and do it all again
I miss you my friend
Well I think I’ll take a nap, I hope you put my blanket back
But first a quick sweep of the floor
I’ve got a paw to lend, I don’t even have to bend
That’s what these short legs are for
True love never ends
And i still lay, where I’d lie, I’m still the apple of your eye
There’s still that place just slip inside
Still brings a smile, every time
Right now, I’ve got my head out the window
Rolling through the countryside, so many tales in the wind
Spending my days chasing after butterflies
I wake up and do it all again
Look I can fly, it’s just like a dream, swim in the light, it’s just
Like a dream, just like a dream…true love never ends

She got a smile will light up a room
She got a walk you forget what you’re doin’
I always gotta see her in the middle of the day
I always gotta watch when she’s walking away
She’s a beautiful mother to a beautiful child
She find the places drive me wild
I’m crazy bout’ that woman want to spread it around
I feel it where it counts from, 4 doors down
She’s my baby, and every night my baby she come around
Well I think I love her, think I love that girl 4 doors down
Under the covers she moves like a cat
I’m always curious what she’ll do with that
If I have a worry she takes it away
I’m always amused by the things she’ll say
She sends me pictures of flowers in her legs
She likes to make love every time it rains
I’m crazy bout’ that woman want to spread it around
I feel it where it counts from, 4 doors down
She’s my baby, and every night my baby she come around
Well I think I love her, think I love that girl 4 doors down
Yeah!, she’s my baby, and every night my baby she come around
Well I think I love her, think I love that girl 4 doors down
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For sixteen days the rains came down
Each drop wrung from our love
The levees broke, it’s too late now
What’s done, is done, is done
Every drop wrung from our love
Fast as they rose the rivers fanned out
Nothing was left as before
Life sprung up from was long thought dead
You were standing there at my door nothing left as before
Last night my dear was heaven on earth
Could have held onto you ‘til daylight
Let me tell you love, for what it’s worth
There’s nothing I own I wouldn’t throw just to spend with you one more night
I’ve heard it said many times many ways
Love has got to find you
Like the rivers rise and the rivers fall
There’s nothing much you can do love has got to find you
Like a newborn child I give you myself
Forever, whatever will be
Like a bee in your flower, I’ve tasted your love
You’ve given so sweetly to me
Forever, whatever will be
Last night my dear was heaven on earth
Could have held onto you ‘til daylight
Let me tell you love, for what it’s worth
There’s nothing I own I wouldn’t throw just to spend with you one more night
Like a newborn child, I give you myself
Forever, whatever will be
Like a bee in your flower, I’ve tasted your love
You’ve given so sweetly to me

You’ve got beautiful lies,
Words on your lips wear the best disguise
I don’t care if they’re true
Just tell me lies I need to hear from you
Tell me things you’ll do you never intend to
Write me love letters you’ll never send to me
Just look into my eyes and
Tell me your, beautiful lies
I still recall that day we met
Good luck got just about as good as luck can get
For a boy like me with a girl like you
Just like make-believe this boy just needs
A few lies to hang onto
Tell me things you’ll do you never intend to
Write me love letters you’ll never send to me
Just look into my eyes and
Tell me your beautiful lies
These days have been, heaven sent
You took me places I never went
If it’s all a dream just leave me lay, here
If it’s all the same to you, I’ll play the fool
And believe everything you say, dear
Tell me things you’ll do you never intend to
Write me love letters you’ll never send to me
Just look into my eyes and
Tell me your, beautiful lies
Sometimes aloha’s hello, sometimes goodbye

You were the girl at the end of the block
All roller skates and sun-drenched locks, oh my
And i was the boy too shy to say hi
So, I wrote it on the sidewalk, for you passing by
Those were the days the good old days we find out too late
They all slip away, slip away
Now you’re sleeping so sweetly, in the dashboard lights
Breathing in rhythm, to the center white lines
I just close my eyes we’re together once more
You and me 4ever…24
They came and went those summers that we spent
Goofin’ on our big ideas and making bigger plans
Drivin’ round the lake with Dylan gettin’ high
Swimming’ under moonlit nights, drinking rose’ wine
Those were the days the good days we find out too late
They all slip away, slip away
Nowyou’re sleeping so sweetly, under starlit nights
Satellite streaking across northern lights
I just close my eyes we’re together once more
You and me 4ever…24
I thought you’d always be there—but you’re gone, you’re gone
You’re gone, you’re gone, I know—I’ve looked everywhere
Now you’re sleeping so sweetly, as the fire burns down
Sinatra is crooning, it’s my kind of town
I just close my eyes we’re together once more
You and me 4ever
You were the girl I thought would always be there
I took your love with us everywhere
Hold my hand as we drift back in time
Under moonlit nights, drinking rose’ wine
We’re 8x3 we’re 6x4, the age we will be, 4ever more

Waiting out the day, another one slips away
Your own breath the only sound
Fettered by the weight, looking for the strength
To get your feet on the ground
Sunlight crawling across your room
World turns outside your door
Waiting for the change baby it’s coming soon
Seems like miles across that floor
Sooner or later, it comes down to waiting
Till faces turn friendly again
Somehow or another we stumbled on each other
Baby it’s me now, with you till the end
And you can be sad, and I’ll, I’ll be there
To take your hand
Waiting out the night, another long, lonely ride
Watching shadows on the wall
Dusk or dawn, never really know how long
Time don’t mean nothing at all
Looking for a sign, maybe something in the light
Feeling like nobody’s child
Close your eyes baby, slip inside
The change will be along now, in a little while
Sooner or later, it comes down to waiting
Till faces turn friendly again
Somehow or another we stumbled on each other
Baby it’s me now, with you till the end
And you can be sad, and I’ll, I’ll be there
To take your hand
